The ScreamBox is a physical installation inspired by Edvard Munch’s The Scream, focusing on the colors of the sunset in the painting and the body expression of the subject crossing the bridge. Built from modular space frame elements and colored mirror plates, the structure creates a kaleidoscopic chamber of reflection and light that mimics both the sunset tones in the painting and the disorientation that Munch described as “a scream from Nature.” Visitors can enter the box through the opening at the bottom of the structure and interact by rotating the mirrored plates, altering how light and color bounce around the space.
The ScreamBox App extends the installation into the digital realm, offering an interactive exploration of color and perception. Using the palette of The Scream, it generates stroboscopic light pulses that, when viewed with closed eyes, stimulate the optic nerve and produce vivid phosphene patterns — kaleidoscopic images that echo the painting’s emotional intensity. Users can adjust both the colors and frequency of the pulses in real time, shaping a personalized experience. By combining light, color, and perception, the app transforms the act of viewing art into a participatory, multi-sensory encounter.
