Open Space Museum: A Truly Open Art Space

The Open Space Museum is now being continued and further developed by Virtuale Switzerland.

This is an important step for us, because the project touches many of the questions that have shaped Virtuale Switzerland from the beginning: How can art become more present in everyday life? How can digital media, public space and direct encounter come together? And how can cultural projects reach people who may not have planned to visit an exhibition at all?

The idea of the Open Space Museum is simple, but powerful. Art does not have to wait inside a building. It can move into the city, appear at a busy crossing point, on a public square, at a market, near a station or along a route where people already pass by, pause and meet.

For us, this is where the project becomes interesting. The Open Space Museum is not only about showing artworks. It is about creating situations. A person walking through the city may suddenly encounter an image, a sound, an augmented-reality experience, a light object or a small artistic intervention. The moment is unexpected, but it belongs to the place.

The project is mobile, modular and open. It can appear in different contexts, change the atmosphere for a while and then move on. It is not bound to one building, one institution or one fixed audience. It can follow the movement of the city.

Virtuale Switzerland will develop the Open Space Museum as a truly open art space: a platform for exhibitions, mobile presentations, artistic experiments, public cultural events and collaborations with artists, festivals, cultural institutions, urban partners and private supporters.

What matters to us is the impact in real public space. Does the project create curiosity? Does it make people stop for a moment? Does it open a conversation? Does it bring art closer to everyday life without making it smaller?

This is the direction we want to take with the Open Space Museum. It should remain mobile, experimental and generous — a cultural format that can move through the city and create moments of attention, encounter and discovery.
